The Global Goals World Cup (GGWCup), the first women’s only global football tournament in the Middle East to support the United Nations’ 17 Global Goals, will be held in Dubai on January 19, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

The one-day five-a-side tournament consisting of 24 women’s teams will be organised by Dubai-headquartered Sustainable Mindz and Denmark-based Eir Soccer under the patronage of the Danish Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Save the Children and the United Nations Development Programme. Bollywood actor John Abraham will also be in attendance as an ambassador.

The event uses the power of sport to inspire individuals to take positive actions. Matches will be played under different rules with points awarded for scoring goals as well as working towards the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, such as ending poverty and zero hunger.

Women of all ages can play in teams of five to eight players, while choosing one of the 17 UN Global Goals to advocate for, registering via www.ggwcup.com. The winning team gets a spot in the global final to be held in New York in September 2018, over UN General Assembly Week.
