A man was told he faces four years in jail after discovery of a cannabis farm in a semi-detached house on a quiet residential street.

The commercial growing operation was busted when police officers caught a whiff of cannabis while passing the property on Half Mile Road in Norwich on March 31.

Juozas Strankauskas, 23, was arrested when 79 plants in a mature state of growing were found in a room converted to include growing lights, fans and ventilation equipment.

Appearing at Norwich Magistrates’ Court, and speaking through a Lithuanian interpreter, he pleaded guilty to being concerned in the production of a class B drug.

The court heard that it had been a substantial operation and that the electricity supply had been illegally bypassed to power the growing equipment but that he was not facing a separate criminal charge over this.

District Judge Sahil Sinha committed him to be sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on May 5, warning jail was “inevitable”.

He remanded him to remain in custody saying a likely sentence of up to four years and the prospect of deportation meant he was a flight risk.
