Man who pleaded guilty to NYE terror attack to be sentenced
A Maine man who pleaded guilty to attacking NYPD officers with a knife on New Year's Eve in 2022 will soon be sentenced.
The defense is asking for Trevor Bickford to be sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by 15 years of supervised release.
The defense said terrorism experts found his assault was related to hallucinations and not a result of radicalization or extremism, adding that Bickford started mental health treatment in jail to reduce his hallucinations.
The defense is also arguing Bickford was raised in a chaotic and violent household.
Bickford's attorneys said his family has noticed a significant change in him since starting treatment, adding that he is no longer a practicing Muslim and has converted to Christianity.
However, the prosecution is seeking a 120-year sentence for Bickford, arguing the attack was premeditated and Bickford told investigators he "intended to wage Jihad and kill as many of his targets as possible."
Prosecutors are also arguing all three NYPD officers involved in the attack are still traumatized, with some unable to return to work.
Prosecutors said Bickford admitted to planning a trip to Afghanistan to "ally" with the Taliban, but he had no intention to join Al Queda.
Bickford's sentencing is set to take place on Thursday, May 9.
