A 28-year-old man who shot dead an Aurora man over a $20 dispute has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Jacob A. Shockey was sentenced on Tuesday by Arapahoe County District Court Judge Michael Spear for the death of 44-year-old Terrence G. Davis, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

On Aug. 24, 2017, Davis was shot three times in an alley in the 1400 block between
Boston and Chester streets just of East Colfax Avenue, according to a news release.

An arrest warrant was issued for Shockey, an admitted gang member, in October 2017, the release said. On Oct. 30, 2019, an Arapahoe County jury found him guilty of second-degree murder.

“In this case, a vicious murderer who callously took the life of another man is going to spend a long time in prison,” said District Attorney John Kellner, in the release. “This does not bring back the victim, but hopefully it brings some measure of relief to his family.”

Evidence in the case showed that Shockey was angry at Davis over a $20 dispute. During Tuesday’s sentencing, Davis family members spoke to the judge, virtually, and asked for a maximum sentence, the release said. The sentencing range was 16 to 48 years in prison.

“Without any thought or remorse, he viciously murdered my brother,” the victim’s sister told the court. “I will never be able to forget what that animal has done and what he has taken from my family.”

“I have been left to stand in the gap and do all that I can for our kids,” said the mother of Davis  children. “It is not fair for someone to take another person’s future. … My kids and I are still hurting.”

Shockey, who has a criminal record in Nevada, Pennsylvania and Colorado, was on probation in Adams County for motor vehicle theft at the time of the shooting. He was being held in the Denver jail when the homicide warrant was issued. In June 2018, Shockey pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in Denver and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Arapahoe County sentenced will run consecutive to the Denver case.
