Erik Hartstrom of Hartstrom Law to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

According to attorney Erik Hartstrom, it doesn't matter how much money you have. You don't have to be a millionaire to protect your children and your legacy.

Hartstrom is the founder of Hartstrom Law, an estate planning practice.

“We do two things: keep families out of court after someone passes away and keep the children from fighting over the estate,” says Hartstrom. “Grandpa only had one rocking chair and there's four children. Somebody's going to end up with it and three people won’t. It's simply a matter setting things ahead of time so the children know what's going to happen and how.”

According to Hartstrom, without a good plan in place, your children will encounter the buzzsaw of the court system as well as an enormous stack of paperwork. People spend days trying to file this paperwork while they're paying bills and making funeral arrangements and grieving the loss of their loved one. Hartstrom Law compiles all the necessary legal documents to essentially bypass this process all together.

“We design a trust so that you never even see the inside of a courtroom,” says Hartstrom. “Control of all assets in your trust is immediately passed to the person you've chosen to be your successor trustee.”

Hartstrom says the technical service he provides is only a small piece of the puzzle. It’s more about preserving your family’s memories, relationships, values, the things that they really care about and want to see their children and grandchildren carry with them.

“I love to listen to people, their stories, and understand where they're coming from,” says Hartstrom. “Everybody has a different story. What makes my work interesting is I get to take their story and give them the legal tools that will best help them carry that story forward. I love educating people and spending time with them and helping them understand what they can do for their family.”

As to when a person should consider estate planning, Hartstrom recommends planning vertically.

“If you asked me, ‘When should I do this?’ My answer is, ‘Are you standing up?’ Then now is a good time.”
