Society 0

Bishkek, Oct. 25, 2018. /Kabar/. The Central Asian Dialogue on Effective Prison Management of Violent Extremist and Terrorist Offenders began in Bishkek.

The event was organized by the representation of Penal Reform International (PRI) by the International Prison Reform in Central Asia in collaboration with the State Service for Execution of Punishment under the Kyrgyz Government and co-organized with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

This event is being held within the framework of the project entitled “Strengthening Countering Radicalization and Violent Extremism in Prisons in Central Asia through Religious Dialogue and Reintegration Programs”, implemented with the support of the UK government.

The issue of a possible link between imprisonment and radicalization leading to violence has become a source of serious concern in the countries of Central Asia. In some cases, prisons have served as a favorable environment for the radicalization and propaganda of extremist and terrorist ideologies. This problem needs careful study and consideration at the regional level, in connection with which, representatives of the penitentiary services from 5 countries of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will take part in the event.

Thus, the Central Asian Dialogue will allow representatives of the penitentiary services and other central state bodies to discuss issues of effective prison administration, maintenance and treatment of convicts for crimes of extremist and terrorist nature.
