Tomorrow morning, a bus will carry students and faculty from the University of Washington's campus in Seattle to Tacoma, where a UW student is being detained at the Northwest Detention Center.

Bangally Fatty is the first UW student detained by immigration officials that the university became aware of. Earlier this month, Fatty's instructors at the Jackson School circulated a petition calling on immigration officials to release the Gambian national and father. The petition garnered more than 5,000 signatures from UW students, faculty, and alumni.

"Bangally belongs back at the UW,” Angelina Godoy, one of Fatty's professors, said in a statement about tomorrow's protest. “He belongs with his wife and his infant daughter, and his continued detention is in nobody’s interest. We will continue to stand by him until he is released and his deportation is stopped.”

UW's immigration law clinic is currently representing Fatty and his family. Tomorrow morning, a federal judge will hear Fatty's lawyers' argument to release him from detention.

"We will continue to monitor his case and hope for a positive outcome," Victor Balta, a university spokesperson, told The Stranger earlier this month.
