A man has been spared jailed after he beat his ex-wife with a nail-spiked club because she cheated on him.

The man – who has not been named – teamed up with the woman’s former lover, who restrained her for the attack.

She was the hit repeatedly with the club, court documents said.

The victim suffered head injuries and need five stitches after the incident in 2015.

Her ex-husband, who said her infidelity brought ‘dishonour’ on him, was handed a 15 month suspended sentence.

Despite the short sentence being challenged, courts in Porto, Portugal, refused to impose a harsher one.

According to CNN, Judge Joaquim Neto de Moura said that the reasoning for this was because adultery was ‘a very serious attack on the honour and dignity of a man’.

The judge said: ‘It was the disloyalty and the sexual immorality of the plaintiff that made (the defendant) fall into a profound depression, and it was in this depressive state and clouded by the revolt that carried out the act of aggression, as was well considered in the judgement under appeal.’

The judges also cited the Bible, stating that passages said ‘the adulterous woman must be punished by death.’

It’s not known if prosecutors will appeal the latest decision.
