The Sierra Leone community in Windsor may be small, but it has big dreams to help overseas families devastated by a massive mudslide.

In August, an enormous blanket of mud swept through the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown, killing more than 600 people and leaving countless others missing.

Gbassay Rogers’ brother, who lives in the affected area, lost his house. So Rogers created the Sierra Leone Association of Windsor Ontario and is planning a fundraising dinner for the victims.

“We want people to know that this disaster has happened,” said Rogers. “Many people are dead.”

The group is still new and only has five members, so it partnered with the African Organization of Windsor and the Windsor West Indian Association for this fundraising event.

The dinner is Oct. 28 at the Caribbean Centre, 2410 Central Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Food will be served and organizers are planning on a guest speaker to address Sierra Leone conditions in the wake of the disaster.

“We are trying to make a difference,” Rogers said.
