Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has despatched a lawyer to the African nation of Togo to secure the release of four Keralites suspected to be victims of an international job racket.

The Togo authorities had jailed K.A. Shaji, Tharun Babu, Nithin Babu and O.A. Godwin on charge of entering the country without proper documents.

Their relatives told the State government that a recruitment agent based in Ghana had cheated them.

A court in Togo subsequently convicted them to four years of imprisonment from their date of entry in 2013. The Chief Minister has written to the Foreign Affairs Minister to intervene on their behalf.
