KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man will spend 21 years in prison after five overdoses, four at his home and another that resulted in a death, revealed he had been selling fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri Teresa A. Moore says that on Thursday, May 2, Dmitry Cattell, 24, of Kansas City, Mo., was sentenced in federal court in connection to a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. Cattell’s actions resulted in at least one overdose death.

U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips sentenced Cattell to 21 years in federal prison without the chance of parole. He pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, two counts of distribution of fentanyl, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and one count of being an illegal drug user in possession of a firearm.

Court records indicated that Cattell distributed at least 6,225 doses of fentanyl during the conspiracy between Sept. 12, 2019, and April 5, 2022. He admitted that the conspiracy also involved at least 1.1 kilograms of cocaine.

Evidence presented during the trial also revealed that on May 18, 2020, at least one person died of a fentanyl-related overdose as the result of Cattell’s drug distribution. The victim was not identified.

Court documents also noted that law enforcement officials were dispatched to Cattell’s home four times - all on drug overdose calls. After he sold a pill to his sister, which caused her to overdose, a search warrant was granted for his home.

Law enforcement officials said they found drug paraphernalia and a Taurus handgun with a defaced serial number under the pillow on Cattell’s bed. He admitted to selling fentanyl to a woman - who crashed her vehicle in front of his home - as well as his girlfriend and his sister who all overdosed. All of the drugs were sold by Cattell at his home.

Moore said Cattell is among 11 other defendants who have been convicted in the case. He is the second to be sentenced. Co-defendant Dominic Holland, 25, was sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison without the chance of parole.
